WisconsinEye Shuts Down; Replacement Network Proposed

WisconsinEye, the nonprofit public affairs network that for nearly two decades provided gavel-to-gavel coverage of Wisconsin government, shut down in mid-December after failing to secure sufficient funding. The organization cited ongoing financial challenges and an inability to meet fundraising targets needed to access state matching funds.

In response, Democratic lawmakers have proposed legislation to create a new, state-funded public affairs network to replace WisconsinEye’s role. The proposal would establish a publicly supported entity to provide nonpartisan coverage of legislative proceedings and maintain a publicly accessible video archive.

Meanwhile, WisconsinEye officials say they are continuing conversations with legislators and other stakeholders about potential long-term solutions that could allow some form of independent public affairs coverage to return. Supporters say the bill is aimed at preserving transparency and public access to state government, while questions remain about funding and legislative support as the proposal moves forward.
