Gov. Tony Evers has announced he will join the U.S. Climate Alliance, a coalition of governors committed to addressing climate change at the state level. The Alliance seeks to uphold the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, from which the U.S. withdrew in 2017.

Members of the Alliance aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to levels 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025. Evers’s release said he plans to explore new energy saving goals for state agencies, look at increasing solar power, and help businesses make smart energy choices.

Including Evers, 21 governors make up the U.S. Climate Alliance. Michigan’s newly elected Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer also joined the Alliance this month. The governors of Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maryland are the only Republican governors in the Alliance.

While environmental groups praised Evers’s announcement, the business community expressed concerns about how policies under the Alliance could affect manufacturing and energy costs in Wisconsin.
