As part of Wisconsin’s participation in the Great Lakes Compact, water users capable of withdrawing 100,000 gallons per day are required to report their water usage for the previous year to the DNR by March 1 of each year. The DNR has released its summary of these reports for the 2012 calendar year.

According to the report, “In 2012, total statewide withdrawals exceeded 2.25 trillion gallons of water from over 14,000 wells, ponds, streams, rivers and lakes. This amount is roughly equal to three times the volume of water in Lake Winnebago or enough water to cover the surface area of Wisconsin in about two inches of water. Total 2012 withdrawals were up 4.80 percent from 2011.”
