MADISON, Wis. -- The leader of Wisconsin's Department of Revenue will step down next month, Gov. Tony Evers announced Thursday.
DOR Secretary Peter Barca, who was first appointed in 2019, will leave office on April 9. Evers' office said a search to fill his position is already underway.
"Peter has been with our administration since Day One, and I knew from the beginning that he would be a dedicated, enthusiastic, and effective leader for the Department of Revenue," Evers said. "I thank Peter for service and wish him and his family all the best."
Barca represented the Wisconsin's 64th District in the State Assembly from 1985 to 1993. The district includes the Kenosha area. He resigned in 1993 after winning a special election to represent Wisconsin's 1st District in the House of Representatives.
He lost to Republican Mark Neumann in the 1994 regular election, but his work in Washington did not stop. He was named Midwest Regional Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration by then-President Bill Clinton and later lead the National Regulatory Fairness Program.
Barca returned to Wisconsin politics in 2008, winning back his seat in the 64th Assembly District. He remained in office for a decade, and served as Minority Leader in the Assembly from Jan. 2011 to Sept. 2017.
He resigned from the Assembly in 2019 after Evers appointed him to lead the DOR.
