Recall Recount Begins

The Racine County Board of Canvassers started its recount in the 21st Senate District Recall Election between incumbent Sen. Van Wanggaard and Democrat John Lehman. Wanggaard is contesting the results of his 834-vote loss.

In his recount petition to the Government Accountability Board (GAB), Wanggaard alleges numerous challenges by election observers were not properly documented or acknowledged, individuals were allowed to register and vote without proper proof of residence, individuals voted in more than one location, and that some were given incentives to vote.

The Racine County Board of Canvassers started its recount on Wednesday, June 20, and it must complete the canvass and submit results to the GAB by Monday, July 2. If no appeal is filed, the GAB will certify the results. Wanggaard was required to pay a $685 filing fee for the recount, but the actual cost of the recount will be covered by county taxpayer dollars.
