| | State Budget Progress Stalls as JFC Cancels Meeting | |
After a slower start than previous budgets, the Joint Committee on Finance (commonly called the Joint Finance Committee or JFC) abruptly announced on Thursday, June 19, that they are hitting pause. The announcement followed the committee’s postponement of a major vote on the University of Wisconsin System on Tuesday, June 17. The committee had been scheduled to take up several big-ticket items on Thursday, including child care funding and the state’s Capital Budget.

JFC State Budget Updates: June 10th, 12th & 17th | |
Tuesday June 10th the Joint Finance Committee (JFC) met again for an executive session to consider motions that included Department of Revenue, Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Circuit Courts. The committee includes 12 Republican members and 4 Democrat members; all 12-4 and 4-12 vote tallies were among party lines. With a two 13-3 votes each time one of the 4 democrats voted across their party line.

| | APRN Bill Passes Senate and Assembly | |
In a unanimous vote, Wisconsin lawmakers on Wednesday, June 18, passed legislation that allows Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) to practice independently across the state. The bill now awaits the signature of Governor Tony Evers, who is expected to sign it after previously vetoing similar measures.

| | SCOWIS Sides With AG on Power to Settle Civil Cases | |
The Supreme Court of Wisconsin unanimously ruled this week that the Wisconsin Legislature cannot prohibit the Department of Justice (DOJ) from settling civil cases without the approval of the Joint Committee on Finance. In the fall of 2018, the legislature passed and former Gov. Walker (R) signed legislation into law requiring the legislature’s budget-writing committee to sign off on certain settlements to lawsuits. In particular, the law limited the attorney general’s power to settle environmental and consumer protection lawsuits and cases DOJ files on behalf of executive branch agencies.

Wisconsin’s tourism industry reached unprecedented heights in 2024, marking its third consecutive year of record-setting growth. According to the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, the state welcomed 114.4 million visitors, up 1.4 million from 2023. The resulting economic impact totaled $25.8 billion, surpassing the previous year’s record of $25 billion.
