Evers Announces Voter Referendum Proposal |
Democratic Governor Tony Evers announced this week plans to include a proposal in his 2025-27 budget to establish a binding referendum process in Wisconsin, allowing voters to propose and repeal state laws.

Wisconsin GOP Quickly Advances Resolution for Voter ID Constitutional Amendment | |
In the first week of the 2025-26 legislative session, Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature are advancing a proposal (Senate Joint Resolution 2) to enshrine the state’s voter ID law into the constitution. The measure is moving quickly for it to be placed on the ballot for voters in April.

Third Primary Challenger Enters the State’s Superintendent Race | |
Nomination papers have been filed for the state’s Superintendent election. The current state Superintendent Jill Underly is being challenged by Sauk Prairie School District Superintendent Jeff Wright. This week, it was announced that another challenger, Brittany Kisner, a former special education teacher and education consultant, has filed papers to run.

Medicaid Projected End Fiscal Year with a Small Surplus | |
Medicaid is projected to end the biennium with a $1.2 million surplus in state dollars, according to a recent report from the Department of Health Services (DHS), though earlier estimates had predicted a $29.4 million surplus.

GOP Radio Address Calls for “Freedom in Fuel Choice.” | |
January 3, 2025, in the Wisconsin GOP’s radio address, Sen. Cory Tomczyk (R-Mosinee) said he is planning to re-introduce legislation to preserve consumer choice in fuels. Last session, Gov. Tony Evers (D) vetoed bills authored by Sen. Tomczyk to (1) prohibit state agencies and local units of government from restricting motor vehicle sales based on the energy source used to power the vehicle and (2) separate legislation which would prohibit state agencies and local units of government from restricting the sale of any device – such as lawnmowers, other outdoor power equipment, household appliances – based on the energy source used to power the device.
