Hamilton Political Tidbits – August 21, 2026

Welcome back to Tidbits! It’s been a little while since our last edition, but there’s plenty to catch up on. Following last week’s primary, we’re taking a look at the three likely new Wisconsin State Senators who emerged from the contests. Senate Primaries Result in Three Likely New Senators

Control of the Wisconsin State Senate was arguably more impacted by the outcome of the Democratic primary than by any individual Senate primary. Currently, Republicans hold an 18–15 majority in the Senate. Wisconsin senators are elected to four-year terms, and every two years, half of the seats are up for reelection. This year, the odd-numbered Senate districts are up.

Wisconsin Legislature Begins Work on 2026 Study Committees

With the 2025-26 legislative session concluded, Wisconsin lawmakers are turning their attention to a series of Legislative Council study committees that will examine policy issues ahead of the next legislative session. The Joint Legislative Council approved seven study committees for 2026, bringing together legislators and members of the public with expertise in the topics under review. Study committees typically meet during the summer and fall of even-numbered years and can ultimately recommend legislation for consideration by the Legislature.
