Meeting in virtual sessions for the first time ever, the Wisconsin Legislature is poised to pass comprehensive legislation to address the COVID-19 pandemic. In the midst of the pandemic, Wisconsin held elections that gained national attention on April 7. Those results were released on Monday. This edition of Hamilton Political Tidbits covers the Legislature's extraordinary session, election results, and other updates from the Wisconsin state capitol.

Assembly Passes COVID-19 Legislation

On April 14, the Wisconsin Assembly met in its first ever virtual session to pass legislation addressing COVID-19. The Senate is expected to pass the bill, also in virtual session, on Wednesday. With the Assembly passing the bill on a bipartisan basis, it is expected that Gov. Tony Evers will sign the bill into law.
 
 
Wisconsin Spring Election Results

One week after election day, Wisconsin spring election results were finally released on April 13. On the ballot on April 7 was the Democratic primary for president, a state Supreme Court seat, and many local races. Turnout was the highest for a spring election since 2016, when there were primaries for both Democrat and Republican presidential nominees.
 
  
After Court Rulings, In-Person Voting Proceeds in State Supreme Court Election

After rulings from the Supreme Court of the United States and the Wisconsin Supreme Court the night before election day upheld the April 7 date and absentee voting requirements, Wisconsin's election for state Supreme Court proceeded with few changes. In-person voting was held, and absentee voter requirements were largely the same (though at record high numbers). 

 
Marquette Poll: Voter Opinions on COVID-19 Response

The latest Marquette University (MU) Law School poll, conducted in late March, questioned voters on state and federal response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Voters shared their opinions on the governor's and president's responses to the crisis, the virus in general, and how it has affected their daily lives. 

 
Insurers Respond to COVID-19

Wisconsin health insurers are committed to helping prevent the spread of COVID-19. Various companies providing health insurance to Wisconsinites have already taken actions like waiving coronavirus testing costs and related treatment.
 
 
UPDATED: More Legislators Announce 2020 Plans

In the last few weeks, several more Wisconsin legislators have announced they will not run for re-election in November 2020.
