Wisconsin surpasses 10,000 total COVID deaths

MADISON (NBC 26) — Wisconsin has now recorded more than 10,000 total COVID-19 deaths, according to new data released Wednesday by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS).

DHS reported 24 new deaths Wednesday, bringing the number to 10,014 total confirmed deaths reported since DHS began tracking the virus last year.

The state is also nearing the milestone of 1 million total cases of COVID recorded in the state since the pandemic began. DHS reports that Wisconsin has nearly recorded 980,000 cases of COVID so far.

DHS says 6,477 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 were added to the system Tuesday, for a 7-day average of 3,869 cases per day. The last time the number of new cases was this high was Nov. 23, 2020.

The vaccination rate in Wisconsin is nearing 60 percent. About 58 percent of the Wisconsin population has completed the vaccine series. More Wisconsinites, nearly 62 percent, have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
