These 14 Milwaukee intersections have seen the most car crashes in a year

Driving in Milwaukee is dangerous. That's what public officials, community leaders, and social media timelines have long said.

This week brought another stark reminder when six people died in early Monday morning crashes that also left six people hospitalized. The fatal victims included a 1-year-old girl and three teens.

The crash was the result of a car traveling 80 miles per hour and running a red light and occurred at a hot spot for reckless driving, West Fond du Lac Avenue, according to the Milwaukee Police Department.

Fond du Lac Avenue is a state highway that runs diagonally through northwest Milwaukee, creating a number of dangerous 3-way intersections.

In the most recent traffic data available from MPD, Fond du Lac Avenue appears five times in a listing of what the department considers the top crash intersections in the city.

Here are the worst intersections for crashes and hit-and-runs between May 2021 and May 2022:

At least 81 crashes have occurred where Fond du Lac Avenue, Capitol Drive and 51st Boulevard intersect

The crossing of two of Milwaukee's most prominent streets — West Fond du Lac Avenue and West Capitol Drive — is considered one of the most dangerous intersections in the city.

Milwaukee police reported 43 crashes at the intersection in a year's time, with 12 considered hit-and-runs. The intersection is tied for the most crashes in the city.

The intersection is close to the Carson Academy of Science and the popular food spot, Zaza's Steak & Lemonade, sits on the corner.

Another nearby intersection — North 51st Boulevard and West Fond du Lac Avenue — is among the top five crash intersections. Police reported 38 crashes in a year, with 10 hit-and-runs.

Another 81 crashes occurred at where Fond du Lac Avenue, Center Street and 27th Street intersect

The intersection tied for the most crashes in the city is North 27th Street and West Center Street. Police reported 43 crashes in a year, including 18 hit-and-runs.

Nearby is where North 27th Street crosses with West Fond du Lac Avenue, which saw 40 crashes in a year, including 16 hit-and-runs.

Also in the same immediate vicinity and considered one of the worst crash intersections in the city is West Center Street and West Fond du Lac Avenue. Police reported 38 crashes in a year, including 10 hit-and-runs.

Among the notable spots along this set of intersections are the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, Milwaukee Public Library Center Street Branch, and Fryerz, a late-night food spot.

Intersections of Fond du Lac Avenue, Burleigh Street and 35th Street saw more than 110 crashes

One crossing of three prominent streets on the city's north side saw more than 110 crashes in a year.

The intersection of West Burleigh Street and West Fond du Lac Avenue resulted in 37 crashes in a year, including 16 hit-and-runs, according to police.

North 35th Street and West Burleigh Street saw 36 crashes, with 14 hit-and-runs and North 35th Street and West Fond du Lac Avenue saw 34 crashes, including 12 hit-and-runs.

Nearby, along Fond du Lac Avenue, is the Sherman Phoenix, a hub for Black entrepreneurs and small businesses. Across the street is Police District 7.

35th Street and Capitol Drive third most crashes in Milwaukee

Ranked third for the worst crash intersections in the city is North 35th Street and West Capitol Drive. Police reported 41 crashes, including 18 hit-and-runs.

The intersection is home to some shops and a self-storage facility.

27th Street, Teutonia Avenue and Hampton Avenue intersect

Another crossing of three prominent streets on the city's north side is North 27th Street, North Teutonia Avenue, and West Hampton Avenue. The intersection saw 34 crashes, including 15 hit-and-runs.

North 27th Street ends when it joins with Teutonia Avenue, but resumes a block away just south of Hampton Avenue. An Advance Auto Parts store sits prominently on this intersection.

32 crashes occurred at 60th Street and Silver Spring Drive

Near Westlawn Gardens on the city's northwest side is the intersection of North 60th Street and West Silver Spring Drive. The intersection saw 32 crashes in a year, including 14 hit-and-runs.

60th Street and Capitol Drive saw 32 car crashes

Police also reported 32 crashes, including 12 hit-and-runs at North 60th Street and West Capitol Drive. Two people died in a crash at the intersection in 2021.

The intersection is close to the Midtown Shopping Center, the largest retail center in the city.

32 crashes reported at Sherman Boulevard and Capitol Drive

West Capitol Drive crossing with North Sherman Boulevard is also a problematic intersection. Police reported 32 crashes, including 12 hit-and-runs.

The only intersection, among the top crash intersections, not on the north side of Milwaukee is a south side intersection where three streets cross.

Police reported 32 crashes, including 14 hit-and-runs, at South Cesar Chavez Drive, South Muskego Avenue, and West Greenfield Avenue, where Pete's Fruit Market and a Chase Bank sit prominently.
