(WLUK) -- The first meeting of an advisory group formed to discuss the issue of "forever chemicals" known as PFAS is Tuesday afternoon.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is hosting the meeting of the PFAS External Advisory Group. The council includes business leaders, local government officials, environmental advocates, public safety officials and citizens.

PFAS are man-made chemicals found in a number of products, including fire-fighting foam. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, PFAS can increase cancer risk, affect growth, learning, and women's fertility.

They have been an issue in Marinette County, where Tyco used them at its Fire Technology Center. PFAS have also been found in lakes in the Madison area.

The first meeting of the PFAS External Advisory Group is set for 1-3 p.m. Tuesday. Members of the public can attend the meeting online. A schedule of future meetings will be posted on the DNR's website.
