A community group representing a variety of Milwaukee stakeholders is pushing to tear down and replace the elevated section of Interstate 794 in downtown Milwaukee with a ground-level boulevard.
"The goal of our project is just to get the city of Milwaukee to study a boulevard," said Gregg May, of the group 1,000 Friends of Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin DOT has already begun to study future upgrades for the approximately one-mile stretch of I-794 between the Marquette Interchange and the Lakefront.
Now, advocates of a boulevard plan say a ground-level option on Clybourn Street would spur new development and better link Milwaukee's Downtown and Third Ward neighborhoods.
Bay View resident David Chavez supports the boulevard idea, saying, "It probably would improve downtown, because you have less concrete doing nothing."
While others, like Third Ward commuter Brad Johnson, believe the freeway should remain as it is.
"The traffic flow to me seems pretty good on most days," Johnson said.
A spokesman for Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson tells WISN-12 News that the mayor is open to the possibility of an at-grade boulevard.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation recently began its I-794 freeway study. A spokesperson said it should be complete by 2025, with a tentative construction window of 2026-28.
Asked about the possibility of the freeway being replaced by a boulevard, the DOT spokesperson said, "all options are under consideration."
