GRESHAM, Wis. (WSAW) - Gov. Tony Evers has approved a $3 million contract to improve the intersection of WIS 29 and Shawano County U in the town of Herman, near Gresham. It is one of the county’s deadly intersections.

The WIS 29 westbound lanes to the east of the intersection will be reconstructed to improve site distance. The County U intersection will be reconstructed into a J-Turn to improve safety.

From 2013-2017, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation records show there were a total of 15 crashes at the intersection, nine of which resulted in injuries. Of those, three crashes were fatal crashes resulting in the death of four people. A DOT spokeswoman told NewsChannel 7, the typical crashes observed at the intersection were angle collisions between crossing/ left turning vehicles on County U and through vehicles on WIS 29. 2013 to 2017 is the study period used for the design of the safety project.

Work is scheduled to begin June 28. Construction is scheduled for completion by November 2021.
