4 former Wisconsin Supreme Court justices endorse Owens for AG

Four former Wisconsin Supreme Court justices have endorsed Ryan Owens, a Republican candidate for Wisconsin attorney general.

Owens is a political science professor at UW-Madison and an affiliate faculty member at UW Law School. He’s running as a Republican against incumbent Democrat Attorney General Josh Kaul in the 2022 election.

Owens’ campaign on Tuesday said the former justices Dan Kelly, Michael Gableman, David Prosser and Jon Wilcox are supporting Owens in the race.

Kelly called Owens a good family man who will “always defend our freedoms and the rule of law.”

In an op-ed for the Wisconsin State Journal, Gableman said Owens will be a leader who respects and stands up for law enforcement, and someone who will “give law enforcement, and everyone in our communities, a square deal.” Gableman was on the bench for 10 years from 2008-18, in addition to serving as a circuit-court judge and Ashland County district attorney.

Prosser, who’s also a former Assembly speaker and state representative, also views Owens as a leader who has a true understanding of government. He said Owens is committed to freedom, fairness and the rule of law.

As for Wilcox, who served on the high court from 1992-2007, he described Owens as a man of great integrity and principles, and someone he trusted to manage the Department of Justice.

Fond du Lac District Attorney Eric Toney is also running as a Republican candidate. The primary election is scheduled for Aug. 9, 2022. Follow @“WLJreporter”
