The Joint Finance Committee took up the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) budget in their May 23 executive session.
JFC Democrats presented an omnibus motion to adopt Gov. Evers’s DPI proposals. Because the motion included items already removed from the budget in JFC’s first executive session, JFC chair Rep. John Nygren (R-Marinette) ruled the motion out of order, and the committee did not vote on the Democrats’ proposal.
Instead, JFC ultimately passed an omnibus motion from Republican committee members 11-4 along party lines. The JFC-approved education budget included a $330 million GPR increase in school aid base funding, $25 per pupil aid increase in each year of the biennium, and $97 million GPR increase in special education aid.
