LeMahieu, Fellow Legislators Announce Wave of Retirements

A growing number of retirements in the Wisconsin State Legislature are setting the stage for significant turnover ahead of the 2026 elections, with departures spanning both the Senate and Assembly.

In the Senate, Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu announced he will not seek reelection, marking the end of his tenure as one of the chamber’s top Republican leaders. He is joined by veteran Senator Van Wanggaard, whose retirement opens up a long-contested seat.

The Assembly is also seeing notable exits. Speaker Robin Vos, the longest-serving speaker in state history, is stepping down after more than a decade leading the chamber. Several Republican lawmakers, including Rick Gundrum, Dave Murphy, and Kevin Petersen, have also announced they will not run again.

On the Democratic side, some Assembly members are leaving to pursue other opportunities, including Francesca Hong, Jenna Jacobson, and Robyn Vining.

Together, these retirements signal a major shift at the Capitol. With multiple open seats and newly drawn legislative maps, the 2026 elections are expected to be highly competitive and could reshape the balance of power in Wisconsin.
