Partisan control: During the 2021-22 legislative session, Republicans controlled the Wisconsin Senate with 21 members (four did not seek reelection), while Democrats had 12 members (three did not seek reelection).
Uncontested races: In five Senate races, only the Republican Party had a candidate on the general election ballot. This included the open seat in Senate District 23. Some of these races had contested primaries.
Incumbents facing primaries: Two Republican legislators, Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu and Sen. Van Wanggaard, faced primary challenges from members of their own party.
