Two lawsuits challenging Wisconsin’s congressional boundaries have been filed, asking the Supreme Court of Wisconsin to declare the state’s congressional district map unconstitutional and to redraw the map before the 2026 midterms. Wisconsin is currently represented in the U.S. House by six Republicans and two Democrats. The lawsuit seeks to bypass lower courts and to have the Supreme Court of Wisconsin exercise original jurisdiction. Judicial liberals control the Wisconsin Supreme Court 4-3. The Court’s liberal majority struck down state Assembly and state Senate maps in 2023. Before the 2024 fall elections, on the cusp of the liberal majority redrawing the state’s maps as a result of its ruling, the GOP-controlled Legislature passed new, more Democratic-friendly maps. As a result, in the 2024 general elections, Democrats picked up 10 seats in the state Assembly, reducing the Republican majority by ten seats to 54-45, and Democrats flipped four seats in the Senate to narrow the GOP majority to 18-15.
