Brooks, O’Connor Join Growing List of Legislators Not Seeking Reelection

Reps. Robert Brooks (R-Saukville) and Jerry O’Connor (R-Fond Du Lac) have announced they will not seek reelection to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 2026, adding to a growing list of lawmakers who plan to leave the Legislature at the end of the current term.

Brooks has served in the Assembly since 2015, representing a southeastern Wisconsin district and participating in several committees focused on workforce development and higher education policy. O’Connor, who currently represents the 60th Assembly District, joined the Legislature more recently after winning election in 2022 and later serving under the state’s updated legislative maps.

Their departures will create open Assembly seats in the 2026 election cycle, when all 99 seats in the chamber will be on the ballot.

Several other legislators have also announced they will not return next session. In the Assembly, Republican Reps. Rick Gundrum (R-Slinger), Dave Murphy (R-Hortonville), and Kevin Petersen (R-Waupaca) have said they will retire at the end of their terms. Robin Vos (R-Rochester) has also announced he will not seek reelection after serving more than two decades in the chamber.

In addition, several Assembly members are leaving their current seats to pursue other offices, including Francesca Hong (D-Madison), Jenna Jacobson (D-Oregon), and Robyn Vining (D-Wauwatosa), who have launched or announced bids for higher office.

Retirements have also been announced in the Wisconsin Senate, where Sens. Steve Nass (R-Whitewater) and Rob Hutton (R-Brookfield) have said they will not seek another term.

With multiple lawmakers stepping aside across both chambers, the 2026 election cycle is expected to bring a significant number of new faces to the Wisconsin Legislature.
