Introduction

The September primary garnered the attention of roughly 16 percent of voters. Observers expected a turnout ranging from 20 to 25 percent. Therefore, one in six voters decided which candidates will face off in November in some key races, including: Attorney General; GOP Lieutenant Governor; and the open 8th Congressional District, among others.

Highlights of the Primary results include:

  • Peg Lautenschlager becomes the first incumbent Attorney General to be defeated in a primary election in the last 58 years.

  • All legislative incumbents who faced primary challenges were victorious.

  • Political newcomer Dr. Steven Kagen defeated early frontrunner Nancy Nusbaum, the former Brown County Executive, in the 8th CD Democratic Primary.  Jamie Wall, the third candidate, also out polled Nusbaum.

  • Outgoing Speaker John Gard handily defeated Assembly colleague Terry McCormick in 8th CD Republican Primary.

  • Two Assembly Democratic Primaries will be decided by recounts:

  • Assembly District 87: Dewey Floberg – 2,652 (50.11%); Judy Reas – 2,684 (49.89%)

  • Assembly District 47: Meagan Yost – 2,057 (50.10%); Dan Jardine – 2,049 (49.90%)

Former staffers are good bets in open seat primaries. Greg Gasper is a former aide to State Sen. Joe Leibham and Rich Zipperer is a former staff person for Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner.

Assembly District 37:

  • Greg Gasper – 1,611 (50.74%)

  • Dennis Lund – 1,204 (37.92%)

  • Joseph Hermanny – 360 (11.34%)

Assembly District 98:

  • Rich Zipperer – 4,136 (54.67%)

  • Mike Maxwell – 1,268 (16.76%)

  • Bob Collision – 877 (11.59%)
